AI training work for lawyers and contract attorneys
· By Alex Westfield / Micro1 Partner
Short answer: legal AI tools need lawyers to check their work. micro1 hires attorneys as part-time contractors to redline contracts, grade AI legal answers and write the scoring rules. On Oct 16, 2026 it lists 33 legal roles with listed pay of $70 to $400 an hour.
What the work involves
The Contract Attorney posting is a good example. It describes these tasks:
- Run simulated contract negotiations and redlining exercises.
- Review AI responses to contract scenarios and give expert feedback.
- Build grading criteria so AI performance on contract tasks gets scored the same way every time.
- Work with product and research teams on data, guidelines and review practices.
The aim, in the posting's words, is to improve how these systems "identify risk and interpret contract language." Other roles cover litigation and motion practice, bankruptcy, compliance, family law, immigration, investment funds, derivatives under ISDA, M&A and SaaS contracts. Each applies the same idea to a different practice area.
Who qualifies
Requirements change by role. For Contract Attorney the posting lists:
- At least 3 years of in-house experience in technology transactions, especially negotiating MSAs, NDAs and DPAs.
- Excellent writing and close attention to detail.
- The ability to turn legal judgment into clear feedback.
- Preferred: exposure to AI or legal tech, and corporate law firm time in M&A or private equity fund formation.
Several roles are labeled for BigLaw lawyers, and those list the highest rates. Junior Transactional Attorney is the entry point. One family law role asks for AAML registration.

How the contract setup works
Every role on this page is a micro1 contractor role. You are not a micro1 employee. The postings list the location as remote and the work hours as flexible.
Applying is free. You sign up on micro1, upload a resume and do an AI interview. micro1 then matches people to customer projects as the projects open.
A match is not instant. Some people wait weeks. Some are never matched to a project. Pay is per hour worked, so your income depends on how many hours the project has. Keep your current work until you know what a project looks like.
Postings close and new ones open often. The rates and role counts on this page are a snapshot from the date at the top. The full roles list is updated more often than these guides.
How to apply, step by step
- Open the full roles list or the table on this page and pick a role that matches your background.
- Read the posting on micro1. Check the location rules and the qualifications before you start.
- Click Apply and create a free micro1 account. Upload your resume.
- Complete micro1's AI interview when it asks. It is a short recorded conversation about your experience. Do it somewhere quiet.
- Lead with your practice area, years in practice and the deal or case types you handle most. Match the role title to that experience.
- Wait for micro1 to contact you about a match. Questions about your application go to micro1, not to this site.
There are often several roles with similar titles, such as two Litigation Attorney listings. Read each posting and apply to the one whose practice area matches yours.
Is this a good fit for you?
It suits attorneys who want flexible remote hours alongside a practice, between roles or after leaving a firm. It also suits contract attorneys used to project work. It is contract work, so plan for hours that rise and fall with the project.
